Understanding France to settle in better

Concrete insights written from the field — not from a textbook.

"Ça va?" — A pocket dictionary of French phrases

French is a precise language. Paradoxically, French people have perfected the art of saying things without really saying them.

Understanding what someone means in France often means reading between the lines. A few useful translations:

"C'est pas mal"
It's good. Really good, actually. In France, "not bad" is almost an enthusiastic compliment.
"On verra"
Probably not. But with elegance.
"C'est compliqué"
The answer is no, but explained so you understand it's not their fault.
"Ça va?"
Not a real question. The expected answer is "ça va, et toi?" Any detailed response will surprise them.
"Je vais voir ce que je peux faire"
Somewhere between genuine intent and a polite refusal. Follow up in a week.
"C'est intéressant"
Sometimes means it's interesting. Sometimes means they're looking for words to tell you they're not convinced.
Key takeaway: In France, politeness often comes through understatement. Learning to decode the subtext is a cultural skill in its own right.
"On verra" veut généralement dire non.

The silences that speak — understanding the French at work

The meeting went well, everyone smiled. So why haven't you heard back about the project?

The French-style consensus

In France, a meeting is not always a decision-making space. It's often a space for sharing ideas. The actual decision happens elsewhere — in a corridor, over coffee, in a discreet one-to-one exchange.

The "yes" that doesn't mean yes

"That's interesting", "it's a lead worth exploring", "we'll need to dig deeper" — these often mean a diplomatic no. It's not bad faith, it's a form of respect that avoids direct confrontation.

💡 Field tip: To confirm a decision is truly made, reframe at the end of each exchange: "So we're aligned on X?" — this forces an explicit answer.

CPAM: what nobody tells you before you start

Registering with French social security is the longest and most underestimated step of any relocation. Here's what you really need to know.

The real timelines

A temporary social security number (NIA) takes 2–4 months. The permanent number (NIR) and Carte Vitale can take up to 12 months. In the meantime, you're registered but without a physical card.

⚠️ Key point: Access to Ameli.fr is only possible once you have your permanent NIR number — not with the temporary one. Always ask for a paper claim form (feuille de soins) at medical appointments.

Your address is critical

CPAM communicates by post. If you change address mid-process without notifying them immediately, you can lose months. Stabilise your address before starting if possible.

Renting in France: the unwritten rules of the perfect application

Landlords sometimes receive 20 applications for one property. Yours needs to speak for itself before you even visit.

The 3x rule

Your net monthly income must be at least 3 times the total rent (including service charges). It's a convention, not a law, but almost all landlords apply it. If you don't meet it, a guarantor is essential.

Documents expected

  • Last 3 payslips (or employment contract + assignment letter)
  • Passport + residence permit
  • Current proof of address
  • French bank details (IBAN)
💡 Tip: DossierFacile is a free government platform that certifies your rental file — landlords trust it and it significantly improves your chances.

Foreign driving licence in France: what changed in 2026

The licence exchange is one of the longest and most poorly anticipated admin steps. What you absolutely need to know.

The 1-year rule

You can drive on your foreign licence for 1 year from your date of residence in France. After that, exchange is compulsory if your country of origin is covered by reciprocal agreements.

⚠️ New since May 2026: A fiscal stamp is now required to validate the exchange application. Your residence permit must be obtained before submitting your file.

ANTS processing time: 6–12 months. Your original licence is sent to the CERT in Nantes. You receive a deposit certificate valid for police checks — keep it with you.

Lunch, a national institution — and an integration tool

In France, eating together is not a trivial act. It's a social marker, a trust space, and sometimes the only moment where real conversations happen.

Lunch is a space for decompression but also for trust. Projects, unspoken tensions, and future plans are discussed there. If you want to understand a company's internal culture, have lunch with your colleagues.

Table etiquette

  • Wait for everyone to be served before starting
  • Bread goes directly on the table, not on the plate
  • Discussing your salary at the table is very taboo
  • "Bon appétit" is said — and reciprocated
💡 Tip: Spontaneously suggesting "Shall we have lunch together?" is a strong integration signal. French people appreciate direct initiative in informal contexts.

Opening a bank account in France as a newcomer

Without a French account, you can't sign a lease or receive your salary. And yet, opening one can take up to 6 weeks. Plan ahead.

What you'll need

  • Valid passport
  • Visa or residence permit
  • Proof of address (even temporary)
  • Employment contract or assignment letter
💡 Good to know: Some banks are more experienced with expat profiles. I guide you towards the right institution and can assist at the account opening if needed.

Right to a bank account

If you face repeated refusals, the Banque de France can compel an institution to open a basic account. In practice, moving back to a standard account afterwards is very difficult — last resort only.
